Job cards with photos and signatures
Field staff open a job, take before and after photos, record what was done and get the customer's signature on the screen. The office sees it the same day, and the paper trail is not lost in a glovebox.
Some jobs are done on a phone, in a bakkie, in a store room or on a roof, not at a desk. An Android app puts the paperwork where the work happens, and it can keep working when the signal does not.
Spark is a new studio, and I am its only developer, Joshua Webb. I work online only, using WhatsApp and email, for businesses anywhere in South Africa. If you can describe the problem to me, I can talk you through what an app could do about it.
Android is by far the most common phone in South African hands, and many staff already have one. That makes it a practical place to start. These are the jobs an app does well:
Field staff open a job, take before and after photos, record what was done and get the customer's signature on the screen. The office sees it the same day, and the paper trail is not lost in a glovebox.
Scan or tap through a store room and record what is actually on the shelf. Counts that used to take a long afternoon with a clipboard become a clean list you can export.
Customers or staff book a slot, and the calendar updates for everyone. Reminders cut the number of no-shows.
Drivers mark a delivery as collected, on the way or done, and you can tell a customer where their order is without phoning around.
Simple stamp-card or points systems keep regulars coming back, and they give you a way to message customers who have opted in.
Load shedding, remote sites, basements and rural roads all mean patchy coverage. An app built for this saves your work on the phone first, then sends it to the office when a connection returns.
The person in the field never sees a spinning wheel or loses a half-finished job card. That one design decision is often the difference between an app that staff use and one they quietly abandon.
There are two sensible ways to get an app onto phones, and the right one depends on who will use it.
Not everyone has an Android phone. If some of your customers use iPhones, a web app can work for them: it runs in the phone's browser and can be added to the home screen. Sometimes a web app is all you need, and then there is nothing to publish at all.
Describe the job, who does it and where it goes wrong today. A short chat on WhatsApp, email or a call is usually enough to start.
I build a first version of the key screens so you can tap through it on a phone. You tell me what is missing or wrong before anything is priced.
You get a clear written scope and quote, including support and any running costs. Nothing is built beyond the preview until you agree.
I finish the app, test it on real phones, set it up for you and show you and your staff how to use it.
To see the kind of work I do, open the demos in the Work section. They are demos for made-up businesses, not client projects. The home page also describes a workshop booking calendar, a stock-take app and a sales app I have built.
It depends on what the app has to do: a simple app is very different from one with logins, a back-end and links to other systems. The app section of the cost guide shows the ranges South African businesses typically pay. I give you a written quote after a free chat, before any work starts.
A small app with a clear purpose is much quicker than a large one with many screens. The timeline depends on the scope we agree, and I put it in the written quote. You see a working preview early, so you are not waiting for months to find out whether it fits.
Phones and Android versions change, so apps need looking after. We agree in writing how updates, fixes and support work, and what they cost, before you approve the build. You are not left guessing after launch.
This is set out in the written quote, in plain language, before any work starts. We agree who owns the design, the code and your data, and what happens if you ever want to move to someone else.
You see a free preview before you pay anything, and you get a clear written quote before any work starts. Tell me what you need and I will reply on WhatsApp or email.
