PC apps for South African businesses

A lot of small businesses run on one PC at the front desk or the workshop counter, and a spreadsheet that only one person understands. A purpose-built Windows app can replace the spreadsheet with something faster and harder to break.

I am Joshua Webb, founder of Spark Website Studio, a new studio that works online only. We talk on WhatsApp and email, and I look after businesses across South Africa from wherever I am. I can install and set up a PC app remotely, and walk you through it on a screen share.

Back-office tools that fit how you work

Off-the-shelf software tries to suit everyone, so it often suits nobody perfectly. A custom Windows app is built around your steps, in your order, using your words. Typical examples include:

Job and order tracking

Record each job, who is working on it, what parts were used and when it is due. Everyone at the counter sees the same information.

Quotes and invoices

Build a quote from your own price list in a few clicks, print it or save it as a PDF, and turn it into an invoice when the work is approved.

Stock and parts

Track what comes in and what goes out, set a reorder level and see what is running low before a customer asks for it.

Customer and vehicle records

Keep contact details and service history in one searchable place, instead of across a diary, a phone and three spreadsheets.

Daily and monthly reports

See takings, outstanding jobs or stock value for a chosen period without building a report by hand each month.

Works when the internet does not

A desktop app runs on the PC itself. If the line drops or load shedding hits the router, the counter keeps working. The app saves everything locally and can sync or back up when a connection returns.

For a business that cannot afford to stop serving customers, this is often the main reason to choose a PC app over a website-based system.

Replacing messy spreadsheets

Spreadsheets are a good starting point and a poor long-term system. Formulas get overwritten, files are copied and edited in two places, and the one person who built it becomes a risk to the business.

I can take the logic that already works in your spreadsheet, import your existing data and give you proper forms, validation and reports. Nobody can accidentally delete a column of prices.

Reports, Excel and CSV export

Your accountant and your other tools will still want spreadsheets. A PC app can export any list or report to Excel or CSV in one click, in the layout your accountant prefers. That makes month-end simpler and keeps the app useful alongside the accounting package you already use.

Printers, barcode scanners and scales

Many counter jobs involve a device. A PC app can talk to:

How it works

  1. Tell me what slows you down

Walk me through a normal day at the counter. I look for the repeated tasks that cost you the most time.

  2. See a working preview, free

I build the main screens so you can click through them and say what is missing. You pay nothing at this stage.

  3. A written quote

You receive a clear written scope and quote, including support and any running costs. Nothing further is built until you approve it.

  4. Install, train and support

I install the app, import your data, show you and your staff how to use it, and agree in writing how support works afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a PC app, or would a web app do?

If the work happens on one or two computers and has to keep going when the internet is down, a PC app is a strong choice. If several people need the same information from different places, a web app that runs in the browser may suit you better. I will tell you which I think fits, even if it means a smaller job for me.

Will it work with the printers and scanners I already have?

Usually yes. Most receipt printers, label printers, barcode scanners and scales connect in standard ways. I check your actual devices during the free preview stage, so we know before you commit.

What happens to my data?

Your data is stored where we agree: on your own PC, on a company server or in a backup you control. I set up backups as part of the job and explain how to restore them. Personal information is handled with POPIA in mind.

How much does a PC app cost?

It depends on what it has to do. The ranges that South African businesses typically pay for apps are in the app section of the cost guide. You get a written quote after a free chat and a preview, before any work starts.
